Howe Barracks
The Royal Parade development is a large-scale project overseen by Taylor Wimpey, one of the UK’s largest house building companies. This project was based on the former Howe Barracks site on the outskirts of Canterbury, and upon completion will feature an 11-acre ‘legacy park’ including ponds and woodland glades.
Howe Barracks
The development offers a selection of houses and leasehold apartments, all of which would require a robust passive fire protection strategy. More specifically, Taylor Wimpey wanted to guarantee that in the event of a fire, any openings or joints in walls, ceilings and floors would not accelerate the spread of flames and smoke. Therefore, CLM Fireproofing was asked to help create and implement a fully compliant firestopping strategy.
A key requirement of this project was the identification and firestopping of ‘service penetrations’. When work is being carried out to provide electricity, plumbing and broadband, this will often require service penetrations to pass through floors, walls and ceilings. The exact nature of service penetrations can vary, but common examples include cables, pipes and ducts. These can cause small breaches in ‘compartment’ walls and floors, which are built to contain flames and smoke within one specific area of a building.
CLM Fireproofing conducted a thorough inspection of Howe Barracks to identify specific areas in need of firestopping. In particular, our team surveyed communal areas such as lobbies and stairs before sealing a variety of service penetrations.
So that all buildings across Howe Barracks complied with industry best practice, our team would only move onto the next apartment block once they were confident that all fire protection risks were resolved.
