Barlby New School

Barlby New School is a primary school known for its innovative design and for being The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea’s first special school, as part of the Council’s continued commitment to special needs education.

Barlby New School

The design for Barlby New School was based on the existing Barlby Primary School, which would need to undergo considerable redevelopment and expansion. Once completed, Barlby New School would consist of a two-form entry school, nursery and a special school. The special school would be specifically designed to accommodate the needs of young people with severe learning difficulties, including Autistic Spectrum Condition. For both schools to be fit on the site efficiently, the existing school would be replaced with a three-storey building.

CLM Fireproofing were brought on board to implement a full passive fire protection package for Barlby New School. This would include both fire stopping and fire barrier installation to maintain a high-quality and fully compliant fire compartmentation strategy. We opted to primarily use batt and mastic, a high-density mineral fibre board sealed with an acrylic compound.

The first thing our team had to consider was the presence of extensive ‘services’ such as wires, pipes and ducts. All of these services had to be closely inspected to identify any gaps or openings that would allow for flames and smoke to spread within the school. This was complicated by the services being stacked on top of each other. There was also a significant number of walls with multiple socket outlets. Therefore, our fire stopping efforts had to be tightly coordinated to maintain the walls’ structural integrity. As part of this, our team installed putty pads within the walls’ socket box, in adherence to manufacturer guidelines.

Another crucial part of this project was to install fire barriers to maintain effective compartmentation above the Barlby New School’s ceilings. However, numerous services were passing through the ceilings that had to be incorporated into the fire barrier installation. Our team of operatives added fire sleeves to every service on each side of the barrier, in compliance with manufacturer standards. Our team are specialists in all aspects of firestopping, and carried out this intricate work in a swift, professional manner with exacting attention to detail.

At CLM Fireproofing, we welcome the opportunity to navigate complex project requirements, as it allows us to enhance our team’s collective skillset. We expect to deliver this project on November 21, in full compliance with the latest industry standards for fire protection best practice.
