UCL Marshgate
University College London (UCL) has recently announced that it will be building a new UCL East campus on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. This campus will consist of numerous buildings, the largest being Marshgate I. Marshgate I will be a predominantly academic building but will also act as a retail, community and engagement space.
UCL Marshgate

Marshgate I has been specially designed to encourage collaboration and inclusivity across the wider community. Key features include an openly accessible central atrium, ‘Fluid Zones’ at both ground and first-floor level, and open-plan floor spaces throughout the building.
UCL appointed Mace under a pre-construction agreement for Marshgate I, with CLM Fireproofing subsequently being brought in for specialist procurement. More specifically, we were instructed to help Mace procure fire stopping systems to fulfil the project’s specialist requirements for fire protection and acoustic sealing. Therefore, we were responsible for orchestrating an inclusive passive fire protection package for the entire building.
Many areas of the new UCL East Building were open-plan, meaning that in the event of a fire there would be fewer barriers to block the spread of flames and smoke. Fortunately, the CLM team are highly experienced fire stopping specialists. Thanks to our procurement, this project was able to benefit from numerous fully compliant fire protection materials and resources. To name a few examples, our team installed quality putty pads, cavity barriers, fire curtains and structural boarding across Marshgate I. All of these installations combine to maintain thorough and effective fire compartmentation.
At CLM Fireproofing, we are willing and able to assume positions of leadership in the delivery of passive fire protection projects. Acting as one point of responsibility and certification means that we can ensure full compliance in every aspect of the project. It also allows for one central portal of digital records for more efficient and effective project management. We use BORIS, an innovative compliance management software to record and track all of our fire protection projects in real-time. This means every project has a clear audit trail whilst remaining compliant with industry standards.
