The Shard
Project Overview
Standing at 310 metres with 72 habitable floors, The Shard is one of London’s most iconic and complex mixed-use towers.
The building combines offices, luxury hotel accommodation, residences and a public viewing gallery, requiring exceptionally robust passive fire protection systems throughout.
Mace appointed CLM to deliver the firestopping package across the tower.

Firestopping of Service Penetrations
CLM carried out extensive firestopping works across walls, floors and risers, ensuring all service penetrations were sealed in line with the building’s fire strategy. This included:
- Firestopping for cables, pipework, ductwork and trunking
- Selection of systems based on load-bearing requirements, smoke/gas-tightness and movement needs
- Installation of tested solutions suited to high-rise and mixed-use environments
- Restoration of compartment lines across all levels
Each penetration was inspected, assessed and resolved to maintain full fire and smoke separation.
Compartmentation Review
Due to the building’s scale and service density, CLM conducted detailed reviews to:
- Identify unprotected or non-compliant penetrations
- Validate compartment walls and floors in critical zones
- Ensure consistent protection from basement levels to upper floors
This ensured the building met current fire safety regulations and performance expectations.
High-Rise Technical Coordination
The Shard’s height required firestopping solutions that could accommodate structural movement and deflection. CLM:
- Engaged early with the design team to understand movement allowances
- Selected appropriate flexible, movement-capable firestopping systems
- Coordinated installation sequencing with ongoing construction activities
This mitigated risk, avoided rework and ensured long-term system performance.

Commercial Construction
1 Exchange Square
Intumescent coatings, firestopping and BIM consultancy for a 447,000 sq ft Grade A redevelopment at Broadgate. CLM delivered surface preparation, priming, intumescent protection and topcoating across steelwork, supported by digital clash detection and compliant detail selection. Targeting BREEAM Outstanding and NABERS 5*.
Commercial ConstructionPeterborough Court
Cementitious coatings, cavity barriers and firestopping for a 292,000 sq ft Grade A redevelopment at 133 Fleet Street. CLM delivered Monokote MK6-HY application, PROMAT repairs and compartmentation works with integrated pre-construction and product selection support.
HealthcareOak Cancer Centre
Firestopping, cavity barriers and Promat structural protection for a new healthcare and research facility in Sutton. CLM installed certified systems from FSi, Protecta, Firefly and Promat to deliver full passive fire protection across clinical, research and outpatient areas.
Commercial Construction40 Leadenhall Street
Firestopping and compartmentation for a 900,000 sq ft, 34-storey mixed-use tower in the City of London. CLM is delivering tested firestopping systems across tower and basement levels, coordinating closely with trades to maintain compliant compartmentation on a complex, high-density project.
